The Park: Sections - Central Advisory | Exploration | Map | Restcamps | Sections | Statistics | The Park The central plains are a popular area for visitors, and this is where you are most likely to see the large predators of the Kruger National Park. The Big Five (lion, elephant, black rhino, buffalo and leopard) as well as an outstanding variety of birds are found in this section. The central region of the Kruger National Park is renowned for its abundant wildlife. The grassy, plains, dotted with acacia and marula trees, are home to a superb variety of herbivores, attendant predators and many species of birds. Historical sites in the region include a recreated village at Masorini. Recommended routes are way to Engelhard dam from Letaba. Where you have to be on the lookout for lion, elephant, klipspringer and the rare Sharpe's grysbok. The dam is one of the largest stretches of water in the Kruger National Park and is famous for its wealth of bird species. There is always something of interest on the muddy flats. Game watechers should look out for the elephant, impala, hippo and crocodile. Not far away there is an interesting water-ladder which allows fish to swim upstream into the dam from the river below. The Masorini historical site is nice as well. The route takes you past good game viewing areas including the Nhlanganini Dam, Rhidonda Pan and the windmill at Swartklip. Another nice route is a drive in the vincinity of the Pioneer Dam close to Mopani. Where you are likely to encounter zebra, tssesebe, waterbuck and kudu. And in hot weather the elephant looking for relief. Close to Mopani is the Mooiplaas (meaning beautiful farm in Afrikaans) picnic site. But for the best game viewing close visitors may wish to drive further north or south. Shawu dam is another good place for elephants. The restcamps that are open for the general public in the central section are the Letaba, Mopani, Olifants, Orpen and Satara restcamps.
