The Southern part of the Lebombo Trail...The Lebombo 4X4 Trail is a five day trail for experienced 4X4 drivers. Marc McDonald, ranger, but marketing minded decided to look at possibilities for a 4X4 drive after the Kruger National Park opened the Skukuza staff golf club to visitors. Starting at Crocodile bridge in the far south of the Kruger National Park and ending at Pafuri in the north, bordering Moçambique. A distance of five hundred kilometres driven at off road speeds. And of course a great number of informal stops to check up on interesting sites or various wildlife. Quite some land to cover in only five days. It will probably become one of the main attractions for experienced 4X4 drivers within Southern Africa. In this section a five day trip will be described.

Day 1: Crocodile Bridge to Mtini - eighty kilometres
A typical trail starts at 10:00 with an introduction from the trail leader. With the ground rules and instructions a certain degree of safety and professionalism in driving in the Kruger National Park is ensured. Driving off road means being entirely self sufficient. No fast or reckless driving. No driving off existing roads. And important for relaxation, no cellular phones.

After signing indemnity forms and performing last checks on car and equipment the trail will be ready to start rolling. When you are used to not using off limits roads it will be a strange experience to actually enter such a road. People who know the game rangers will now that in a normal situation you might be fined or even removed from the Kruger National Park for something like that. From there the long and dusty road along the Crocodile river is followed.

Game viewing is excellent in these parts because they are relatively quiet. So there is a fair chance of spotting for instance white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, warthog, waterbuck and of course the ever present impala. Many birds like the yellow-billed hornbill and glossy starling are also quite common to encounter. Approaching the foothills of the Lebombo mountains, that form the natural boundary with Moçambique the vegetation changes from dense riverine to mixed woodland. On top of a hill in the Lebombo mountain range the town of Ressana Garcia can be clearly seen.

The bombed buildings show clearly what a devastating effect the civil war had on the country. But the grand Maputo highway shows there is still hope for a once terribly troubled country. Typical trees in this part of the Kruger National Park are fruited bushwillow (Combretum zeypheri) and round leaved teak (Pterocarpus rotundifolius). When heading for Sabie Poort the truly breathtaking view is ominous.
