The restcamp is located in the middle of the Kruger National
Park. Not far from the Lebombo mountain range. Forming the
natural boundary of the Republic of South Africa with the
Republic of Mozambique. The elephant museum in Letaba restcamp
is very interesting and features the magnificent seven that once
roamed the Kruger National Park.
Letaba, one of the park's larger camps features guest cottages,
huts, camping and caravan sites, facilities for day visitors, a
trail, environmental and information centres, elephant museum,
vehicle emergency service, shop, restaurant and laundry.
Letaba
is favoured by many visitors for its very relaxed atmosphere and indeed presents
a welcome sight to weary travellers. It has one of the finest restaurants in the
park, with fine views of the procession of animals in the Letaba River valley.
After you have recovered from the long drive, make sure that you explore the
information centre. There you will find a display which includes photographs,
tusks and information about the "magnificent seven", a group of huge tuskers
which roamed the area in the 1970s and 1980s. You will also find other
interesting information on elephant biology. The spectacular camp boasts
noteworthy marula, wild fig and one of the most impressive Natal mahogany trees
in the entire Kruger National Park. Furthermore there are stands of tall ilala
palms which have been colonised by palm swifts. In fact, bird-watchers should
not miss the short in-camp trail, as they will be impressed by the many species
present. Including mourning doves and brown-headed parrots. Redbilled
Cockpeckers have been seen at the gate, a group of very tame African fish eagle
often perch on the edge of the camp and on the sandbank in front of the
restaurant there is a nest of brown-throated martins.
