The Park: Restcamps - Olifants Advisory | Exploration | Map | Restcamps | Sections | Statistics | The Park The restcamp is located in the middle of the Kruger National Park. Not far from the Lebombo Mountains. This region is famous for its many elephants. Actually Olifants means Elephants in both Afrikaans and Dutch.
The panoramic view of the Olifants river and mopane plains to the north of this camp makes a lasting impression on most visitors. The vista one enjoys from the camp restaurant is particularly memorable at sunrise and sunset, particularly as the landscape usually includes elephant and water birds. Inside the camp an interesting display depicts the ecology of this great river and includes a fresh-water aquarium stocked with indigenous fish. At night, nature films are shown in the open-air amphitheatre. Bird-watchers will be delighted by the many birds that make their homes in the indigenous trees and flowering shrubs inside the camps boundaries. Nesting weavers and redwinged starlings are particularly common, and on the banks of the river saddlebilled storks may often be seen. This is also a good place to see the soaring bateleur. With so much to see and do in and around Olifants, it is not surprising that is has been labeled "the lazy mans camp". If you do decide to venture out you will notice two spectacular tusks adorning the camps gates. Although these tusks are artificial, they are so realistic that elephant have, on occasion, carried them away in order to crush them underfoot in total disgust! Olifants also has a small satellite camp called Balule. Other restcamps: Berg en Dal, Crocodile Bridge, Letaba, Lower Sabie, Mopani, Orpen, Pretoriuskop, Punda Maria, Satara, Shingwedzi and Skukuza restcamps. Other bushveld camps: Bateleur, Biyamiti, Shumuwini, Sirheni and Talamati.
