The Park: Sections - The South Advisory | Exploration | Map | Restcamps | Sections | Statistics | The Park Easy access, a large number of outstanding camps, excellent game drives offering superb opportunities for viewing the area's prolific wildlife, thick vegetation and mountains of granite make the southern stretches the most popular of all in the Kruger National Park. You can immerse yourself in some of the finest game-viewing areas and historic locations in the south. This is the heart of the original Sabie Game Reserve. An astonishing variety of game may be seen here, particularly in the lower Sabie River region which includes some of the most popular game drives in the park. Historic experiences include a route which follows in the footsteps of the early pioneers and a memorial to great conservationist James Stevenson-Hamilton. The environs of Berg en dal are home to rhino, lions, elephant and cheetah, amongst other, but as the vegetation is fairly thick the best game routes are towards the more open areas in the vicinity of Crocodile Bridge, Lower Sabie and Skukuza. It is well worth while to drive to Nearby Matjulu Hill. On the way to this viewing site one is likely to many of the specialist trees of the area, including wild olive and seringa. In the evenings the Matjula Dam is a good spot to see wild dog, white rhino and leopard. Near Crocodile Bridge one is permitted to leave the car at the nearby hippo pool and it is a rare and exciting experience to hear the grunts and snorts of these enormous herbivores as they walk peacefully in the Crocodile river. However the hippo is the number one big animal causing most deaths in Africa. There are no facilities there however. So it is usually a good plan to take a picnic basket. But with all picnics in the Kruger National Park you have to be very careful with the baboons around. They will be very aggressive in approaching you and wanting to share in the picnic. The restcamps that are open for the general public in the southern section are the Berg en Dal, Crocodile Bridge, Lower Sabie, Pretoriuskop and Skukuza restcamps.
