The buffalo needs to graze up to 10 hours a day to keep in good physical condition. Being a strong animal it can move into bushes to get to grasses better than other grazers. The buffalo will feed in the early morning, late evening and during the night to avoid overheating.

The buffalo is a very gregarious animal. It will form herds containing up to 2 000 species. However, herds of several hundreds are more commonly found. During winter large herds are formed that split up during summer. Sometimes bachelors will from groups of up to 30 individuals. Old bulls become solitary and become extremely dangerous. These individuals who are in the power of their life usually cause most damage when encountered by people. The basic social units are family groups of related cows with their calves. There are seperate dominance hierarchies among bulls and cows. Home ranges of herds can cover 60 to 1 000 square kilometres. All depending on the availability of water and sufficient grasses. Territories never overlap. Approaching predators and humans are warned by head tossing and eventually killed if they do not give way. The buffalo can reach speeds of up to 56 kilometres an hour. More average is 44 kilometres an hour.
